Monitoring of sea-ice properties and production (multi-sensor satellite remote sensing)

Recently developed methods for the detection of thin ice and sea-ice leads as well as for the retrieval of the local ice production will be further refined and applied with a focus on regional characteristics of air/sea-ice interactions. Data from recently launched satellite sensors (e.g., Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3) will be used to extend the data basis for the lead and thin-ice re-trieval and thereby allow for a more detailed assignment of pixel-based uncertainty values for the assimilation into models. We aim at merging daily fields of sea-ice properties at 1-km resolution with microwave-derived thin-ice and lead products. An analysis of regional proces¬ses and interactions will be performed using existing datasets and data of field observations at the Cape Baranov observatory in terms of seasonal and spatial variability and associated forcing.

Trier University will process and supply high-resolution boundary fields of sea-ice properties from satellite imagery for climate modeling (Task C). The teams from Trier and Hamburg uni-versities will elaborate on improved methods and uncertainty retrievals for combined pro¬ducts of visible, thermal infrared (Trier University) and microwave (Hamburg University) ima¬gery. Trier University will moreover analyze existing and updated datasets on lead frequen¬cies and ice production in the transpolar system. AARI will complement the regional analysis with field observations of sea-ice formation at Cape Baranov. See below for a detailed description of the research in Task 2B for which the CATS scientists apply for funding on the German side.
